1893-CC Morgan $1 Coin of the Week 2-7-10

Does anyone know if any of the reworked dies have been identified as having been used for 1893-CC $1 coins?

John, my take on it is that the reverse dies used on the 1900 O/CC have never been known to have been used on a Carson City coin. Anyone who has better information please feel free...

I like your quarter too. Any uncirculated example of that quarter is a treat to own. Is that an old holder or a new one? I hear the TPG's are being difficult about toning. Who knows if it is artificial or not. Nice color for St Patrick's Day anyway.

Yes...it does come full circle. Thanks for the correction on one of Ferris' middle names. It is "Gale" not "Gail" as I spelled it.

Supposedly as the story goes, when George Ferris resided in what is now Reno Nevada, he was fascinated by a water wheel on the Truckee river located in what is now the center of town. This water wheel was designed by John Cradlebaugh who moved to Carson City when Nevada was still a territory. John served as a Nevada delegate on the thirty-seventh Congress during the Civil War years, then later became a miner and took up residence in Eureka, NV where he lived out his life.

So, John Cradlebaughs' wheel was probably the inspiration for George Ferris' big "fun" wheel.....that really is a full circle!

Although a lot of people today might not realize it, Nevada and its citizens have played many roles in our nation's history.

It is hard to imagine the genius that created the Ferris Wheel. Like much of the Columbian Expo infrastructure, it was designed and built in less than two years. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is a great book on all of that detail.

Good stuff Randy! There is a lot to talk about with this particular year. I am particularly interested in your reference to the 12 proofs. I would really love to know more about them. Can you fill us in a liitle more?

I have one of the well struck Redfield hoard coins in the purple Ms 65 holder...it's really an MS 62 or MS 63.

Like I said, I don't want to say too much about the '93'-C.C. Proofs, just incase someone may want to highlight them in a future C.O.W. article, however you, or anyone else, can find some more information on them on pages 348-349 in Rusty's "Mint on Carson Street" book. Also there is more info on page 701 of John Highfill's book "The Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia". Hope this shines some light. If anyone else has more info, please enlighten us.
