Hey Drummer-
Nice work! You brought a fact that I did not consider in that San Francisco did not mint any half eagles for 1890. It just never dawned on me and I never noticed it in catalogs. Humm.
My first C.C. half eagle was an 1891 raw in an AU grade, a nice looking coin I bought back in around 1997 or 98 and I paid $300 for it, still have it. I currently don't have an 1890 but, as I said in an eariler COW post that I looked for one at the ANA show in Sacramento and did not see a one that didn't have some form of defect, scratch or something or other, and I only saw two maybe three, so I'm still in the hunt. It is indeed a far scarcer coin than the numbers would tell.
Again, great stuff and will be looking forward to more.

Hi Randy
Thank you for your words! I myself did not realize that the mint in San Francisco didn't produce any 1890 half eagles until I dug into research for this COW post....It's not only fun to do these posts, but educational too.
Your 1891-CC half eagle...have you ever considered getting it slabbed by PCGS or NGC?
Your coin there might yet prove to be your personal "cornerstone" foundation coin for a complete set of "CC" half eagles like my 1890-CC $5 was for me...."The Randy SC Collection"....that has a nice ring to it!
Actually, very nice problem free 1890-CC $5 don't seem to be as easy to locate as the 1891-CC $5 issues. Keep hunting...your coin is out there waiting for you!

Hi Everyone!!! Loosechange back from a business trip to the Great State of Maine. Drummer excellent article regarding the 1890-CC Half Eagle. Since I was able to pick up a EF45 1893-CC myself i felt maybe the only set i could complete would be the 1890's CC short set. As you mention a nice problem free example of the 1890-CC is a hard find. I also did not realize the lack of minting half eagles at San Francisco during 1890. Although I still see the Carson City Mint as the Rodney Dangerfield on the US Mints I think the tides are changing and collectors are seeing the scarcity of these little gems. Great Work Drummer, my friend and as always I look forward to your next "ACT" for the COWboys. BTW great picture of my favorite park Yosemite!!!

Hi Loosechange
welcome back from Maine where the rain in Spain falls mainly in Maine...wait now...that's not quite right is it? Oh well...
Thank you for your nice words regarding my COWpost.
I like your idea of a four-piece 1890's "CC" half eagle set. You are on your way towards that goal with your "foundation coin", the 1893-CC $5. That issue is the toughest of the four 1890's issues if I'm not mistaken...
I love Yosemite too...been there many many times...I did not realize that Yosemite was declared a National Park in 1890 until I did this COWpost! It's good to learn and have fun writing all at the same time.
Anyway my friend, I look forward to seeing your next article.

You must have been there Drummer because that was all it did all week until I came back today was rain. I myself have found out that any Carson Gold is tough to find out here in the east unless maybe at a big show. That said, I do have a dealer looking for Carson Mint coins and he does my favorite 'LAY AWAY" which is the only way with some dates that I will be able to get these beauties. I will look for a 1890-CC half eagle for sure. Yours is a beauty!!

drummer,
I recall when you brought in your amazing collection of "cc" half eagles to the Carson City meeting, this particular coin was the first to catch my eye!
A fun-filled article with interesting and enjoyable facts!
Another Great "COWboy" Masterpiece!
I would like to see the log you are keeping for all the stories in your amazing 19 year "cc" half eagle set.....
Best always
