Hey Drummer...remember the LA coin show that we all attended together?

Bob "suede shoes" Green had two or three of those monsters. In fact, I think either you or Rusty took a picture of him holding the coins.

Personally, I think its rarity is a little over rated...not that I own one mind you!

Hey Belay

Of course I remember that show in LA. What a blast we had!

I agree that the 1870-CC $20 is over-priced, but I still want want one...badly! It's one of my "dream coins" for sure.

All things considered though, the famed double eagle is actually only slightly rarer than it's 1870-CC gold eagle counterpart....for it to be priced so much higher seems out of touch. How the "CC" king of gold coins got that way would make an excellent article in our Curry's.

"Double Eagle" takes an in-depth look at the world of rare coin collecting and why the desire to possess a coin like the double eagle can transform ordinary people into "crazed thieves and liars".

This is a great read for the obsessed collector of double eagles.

Coindrummer,

It is an interesting story.

Latest news about the 1933 $20 coin is that 10 coins were handed over to the US Mint for authentication in 2004. However US Government decided to confiscate them, since these coins were "stolen" from the mint 78 years ago.

One 1933 $20 coin is in private hands. It was sold in 2002 for 7.59 million dollars. This one was previously owned by King Farouk of Egypt.

Yes, that's a very interesting and compelling story guys, and it's been told from several perspectives. I recently read about the famous 1933 Double Eagles in the book entitled "Illegal Tender", by David Tripp.
