Just received a copy of March 2010, of the Numismatist and on the cover I saw an article about Carson City Gold. Eliasberg #1 Revisited. On page 44 a very informative article with coin images (five pages) by Rusty Goe.
If you are not a member of ANA, go to the library and read the article,
it is very interesting. It has prices for 1982 and for 2009. The values will give you an idea what has been happening to the prices of the Carson City gold coins.
Congratulations, Rusty.

We, at Southgate Coins, also received our copies of the Numismatist in the mail. We were all excited for Rusty. And I, for one, cant wait to sit down and actually read through the entire article.
CONGRATULATIONS, Rusty!

I also read the article last night. Very good piece. I am old enough to remember Bowers and Ruddy auctioning off those coins. Missed opportunity for me. Heck, I wish I kept all those "Rare Coin Reviews" that they used to send out.

Just got my copy yesterday and jumped right to that article. Very interesting to read the background behind the auction. What wonderful opportunities people had at that time to acquire a piece of history. Great job on the article, Rusty. Congratulations!
Now, this article begs the question of "Where are they now?" I'm kind of curious as to where all of these Eliasberg CC gold coins are today. I'm guessing a good number of them are in the hands of our own club members. Should we start a survey?
I'll kick it off. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity last year to acquire one of these. Wasn't quite planning on it, and it certainly wasn't in the budget at the time, but it felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was able to purchase the 1881-CC Half Eagle, and it's now one of the cornerstone coins in my CC collection. It was listed in the auction as an XF, but some of the wear magically disappeared and it now resides in an NGC holder as an AU-53. NGC was a bit generous on this one. But, the grade doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I have a piece of that history in my collection.
Now, who else has the others?
Mike

I have to agree, The Numismatist presented Rusty's article with all the pizazz it deserved. It was a very pleasant surprise to receive our issue on an otherwise hectic day.
For Rusty, writing articles is just one of the many side-jobs he has besides running the store, running the club, planning for meetings, attending and presenting lectures... The list goes on!
Congrats, Rusty!
