I'm seriously impressed --- what are the characteristics of a GSA coin that are recognizable enough that you can pick one out that's floating around raw?

Is this the GSA/VAM that you are referring to?

I can't read the label, Off Belay. Is the VAM number on the label?

If you are asking how can you recognize a coin that was cracked out of a GSA holder if it is not encapsulated, I dont think you can. I was just saying that all three of my 80-CC's are virtually identical in appearance.

Roger, do you have photos for your article? You can use mine if you need them.

I think that the one you have pictured, Belayoff, might be the VAM 7 or 7A, which is what Mitchell said in an earlier post is more difficult to find in high grade. Is that yours? The only 3 on the 1880-CC page on vamworld that have 1878 reverses are the VAM 4, 7 and 7A. Do you see a dash under the second 8?

The coin appears to be a VAM4, you can see the 7 and 9 under the 8 and 0 respectively. I'd have to have a close-up of the date to be sure.

The VAM7 coin has a clear date without any evidence of the 7 and the 9. Instead, you have to diagnose the coin with the dash underneath underneath the second 8 of date.
