John & Garryn,
At least Snow adds some value with his buy-back guarantee on his stickered coins.... adding objectivity to the subjective!
I purchased one such coin from him which even included a plasticised photo of the coin which came along with the paperwork!
In addition to Carson City coins, I also have a type collection. Within that set I have four coins with NGC's star designation. Two are nicely toned over a quarter or more of their surfaces. One is heavily toned, but the last, a 1939 Walking Lib 50c MS 67* has ultra soft golden tones around the outside 10% of the obverse and ever so little on the reverse. It's more of a golden haze than a real color tone.
But it's enough that no one would call the coin "white".

1889-CC $20 Variety1-A
The date is small and widely spaced
On the early die state of this variety, the base of the 1 shows repunching.
The mint mark is large, compact and placed to the right. The first C is slightly more than midway between the Y in TWENTY and the D in DOLLARS while the second C is over the far left edge of the D.
It looks that my 1889-CC $20 is of 1-A variety.
What do you think?

1889-CC was the coin that started the "Coin of the Week" project on 9-14-2009. I just found another 1889-CC $20. A slight upgrade from XF-40 to XF-45.This coin just returned from Europe. It has rich orange-gold color with darker hues on the relief details. Most coins of this sort have been dipped over the years and locating a nice coin like this is a challenge.
With price of gold around $1,400 per ounce, common Carson City coins are only 1.3 times more expensive than similar coins from other mints. Buy all you can find, it's a bargain.

I bet an '89-CC dollar in XF45 is more expensive than that double eagle.

Garryn,
1889-CC $1 XF-45 does cost about $1,000 more, but I am staying with the double eagle.
