Hi Belay

Your reply is a great addittion to this 1870-CC half dollar COW post...I did not know this story about the Masons and their work. Just think how truly close we came to being able to include 1869 "CC" coins in our collections!

Thank you all for your kind words. Yes 1870 was indeed an intriguing year at the Carson City Mint. Belay, thanks for the input regarding the Mason's chimney work I did not realize that is what happened. It would have bee neat to see an "1869 CC" but as Garry said you never know with ebay. John, I also collect coins of Canada and even after all these years never knew exactly when the coins of the United States stopped circulating there. Belay, Beautiful 1870_CC half you have there. How long ago did you acquire it? You just don't see that higher grade at all at many shows. And yes Rusty, I would love to own a first year issue Carson City Mint coin.

Loosechange,

I acquired the coin from Southgate Coins several years ago.
The photo does not do the coin justice. The toning colors are vibrant and the piece is nowhere near as dark as the photo appears.

At the time I acquired the coin, I recall there were 5 coins graded higher. The #1 top example at that time was graded MS-62.

If you are truly interested in acquiring one of these classic rarities for your collection, you should check out Rusty's "Southgate Coins" web site. Southgate has three 1870-CC Half Dollars for sale. They are graded VG-8, VG-10 and AU-50.

Hi Belay,
I personally call the Southgate Coins website my own little virtual coin collection of super Carson City rarities. I have drooled, er looked at them many , many times. Actually I am working on my CC type set. Your coin is spectacular. One day I may be fortunate to own such a special coin, but for now I get the best by enjoying all of the "COW"boys collections!
