Unfortunately, like so many of the remaining coins from Carson City, my '75-CC quarter was dipped and cleaned at some time in the past. While this action was not severe, it did wipe out any colors that may have emerged from the toning process. However, about a quarter of the natural patina from aging is still clearly visible, especially on the reverse.

I had Todd Pollock photograph my Type collection, my Carson City collection and several others a couple years ago. Unfortunately, about 2/3 of the images turned out much too dark, such as the '75-CC quarter image posted above. Todd graciously re-shot several at no charge but still, most of my coin images are darker than the coin actually appears in person.

Nonetheless, it is a very solid coin with an strong, original strike.
Note the well-defined neck feathers and claw details on the reverse.

It is amazing how a workhorse coin like that with such a tiny mintage has survived in that state of preservation.

Hey Garry,
Very interesting stuff on the 1875-CC quarter dollar. You've done well. You know, there is something that didn't realize until after I read your article here, that is that there were no 1874-CC quarters minted, at least that are known of. I don't know why that until now I didn't realize it, I knew half dollars and dimes were minted 1870 through 1878, guess I just assumed that the quarters followed suit. That's the beauty of the C.O.W. project, everyone can learn something from it.

better late than never!

I enjoyed your COW post article here on this very rare quarter. I actually owned one of these babies once (NGC AU-50) and traded it many years ago for a couple of other "CC" coins. Big mistake....I did not know then how rare this coin actually is. These were in my "dark ages" before I met Rusty and Marie who would've advised me NOT to make that trade!

The 1875-CC is definitely one of the "sleeper" coins of the series.

If you see one for cheap on E-bay...there's a darn good chance it's not genuine

That's an interesting point Drummer. The Chinese are making zillions of counterfeit coins but, are they sticking just to the rarer dates or are they trying to slip other more moderate rarities through as well?
