I have posted an image of the 1876 Nevada Centennial medal that GarryN refers to for sale on eBay in a brand new section on this discussion board.

Please read about the new Exonumia category in the How to Use the Discussion Board Forum section under the General Topis & News heading.

You can see the 1876 Nevada so-called dollar image in Nevada & Carson City Exonumia under the Carson Mint History section.

Randy,

Your description and history of this coin deserves an image of it.
With 138,441 coins minted and being a historical year one whould think that it is easy to find an example that was not cleaned, dipped or otherwise mistreated. Finally, I found one that meets my requirements.
It is shown below.

The XF-40 coin was replaced by MS-61 in my 18 coin set of Carson City double eagles. The XF-40 has earned its keep. It was bought a few years ago and thanks to the rise of gold price has doubled in value.

The search goes on for a few more Carson City doubles eagles in order to complete the set.

Thanks for posting the pictures, John. I must sheepishly admit, I still don't know how to post pictures on internet web sites. Some day I'll just have to learn I reckon. My 1876-CC double eagle is a raw EF, looking like your EF-40 example. You stated that you have 18 CC double eagles and need a few more to complete the set (of 19). I have 11 different dates so far, from grades VF to AU. Thanks again for your support and the pictures.

Randy,

You posed the question about where all the gold went to, if not into double eagle production? I submit that the difference was probably made into gold bars at the behest of the gold depositors. This is true for both silver and gold deposits at the Carson City mint.

That all may well be true, but did it just sit in bullion bar form at the mint collecting dust, was it shipped to other depositories, to other financial insitutions, to other mints to be coined, to jewelers for rings, watches and bracelets? I'm rambling on a bit now, but it is a curious thing.
